Creamy Dairy-Free Pumpkin Smoothie

I. Love. Fall. It is hands down my absolute favorite season. Bugs disappear and I don’t get all sweaty and grumpy when I’m outside. And that doesn’t even touch on the wonderful flavors of fall. As a PNW girl for most of my life, pumpkin spice everything (especially hot drinks from certain coffee shops) are a big part of my life.

After graduating from college I moved to Arizona to take my first teaching job and learned that fall is just Summer Jr. in Arizona! It was too dang hot to indulge in my favorite seasonal drinks. What a rip-off! If you’re somewhere where you’re as likely to get swangry (sweaty+angry) in October as you are in July, you probably know my pain. No more, though! Now you can enjoy this Creamy Dairy-Free Pumpkin smoothie to welcome fall, no matter what the mercury says.

Cozy up with this creamy dairy-free pumpkin smoothie! Made with real pumpkin and warm spices, it's a quick and allergy-friendly fall treat.

Why You’ll Love this Dairy-Free Pumpkin Smoothie

You are going to love this dairy-free pumpkin smoothie. It’s creamy, delicious, and like a sip of fall that will warm your heart while cooling you down! It’s made with real pumpkin and naturally sweet ingredients that make this smoothie as healthy as it is delicious!

Healthy

Did you know that many countries around the world recommend getting at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day? Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can ensure that you get enough vitamins and minerals to stay healthy while also giving you extra fiber to help lower your risk of cancer and heart disease. Just one serving of this smoothie will give you close to half of your daily minimum!

Kid-Friendly

When my kids were little some of them had trouble with food. You could call it picky eating, but most of it came down to sensory struggles and anxiety. One kid in particular would not touch a smoothie, but loved milkshakes. So all smoothies became breakfast milkshakes. These are delicious enough that your kids will love them, and if you need to re-brand them as ‘fall milkshakes’, have at it!

Allergy-Friendly

You know I’ve got your back when it comes to allergy-friendly recipes. This pumpkin smoothie is dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan. You can also easily make it nut-free with a simple swap!

What You’ll Need

One of the best parts about this pumpkin smoothie recipe is how basic the ingredients are. Everything you need is a basic pantry staple.

Pumpkin Puree

In the US you can find canned pumpkin puree in any grocery store (or at least the vast majority of them). The key to remember is to get 100% pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling.

If you can’t find pumpkin puree where you live (or just prefer to make things from scratch), you can easily make your own with small pumpkins or butternut squash. Freeze it in 1 tbsp servings. I line a baking tray with parchment paper, drop tablespoons of pumpkin puree on it, and pop that in the freezer overnight. Then you can transfer them to your favorite freezer storage container.

Frozen Banana

When you get a smoothie you’re looking for something thick, creamy, and ice-cream like. Often recipes will call for ice cubes to help with that, but ice just waters down the flavor of what you’re making. There is nothing worse than a bland smoothie. Sure, it’s healthy, but it’s also boring

The trick for getting a rich smoothie without losing the flavor is using a frozen banana. The banana adds sweetness while freezing it thickens your smoothie and makes it deliciously creamy!

Pumpkin Pie Spice

Warming spices are the epitome of fall. Not only are they flavorful additions to our baking, the spices found in pumpkin pie spice pack a host of health benefits! Pumpkin pie spice is widely available, but if you can’t find it (or prefer to make your own), I like this recipe.

How to Substitute

Substitutions. You all know how I feel about substitutions. They are important and necessary for those of us with food allergies. The key to successfully substituting an ingredient is to start by figuring out what purpose it serves in your recipe. Pick your replacement based on that. There are a few easy swaps you can make in this dairy-free pumpkin smoothie.

Milk

My favorite dairy-free milk for smoothies is flax milk with added protein. It has a neutral flavor and gives you that little boost of nutrients. Whatever milk you like best will work the same in these smoothies, though.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is a great way to add flavor, creaminess, protein, and healthy fats to your smoothie. If you’re allergic to peanuts or just prefer to go a different route, feel free to use whatever nut or seed butter you like. Almond butter and chickpea butter are two we like in our house.

Banana

The banana in this smoothie is going to add to both the creaminess and the sweetness. If you’re allergic to bananas you can leave it out and use some thick dairy-free yogurt to make your smoothie creamy and a little maple syrup or honey for sweetness.
