What You’ll Need
The best part about this apple pie filling recipe is that you only need a few basic kitchen staples to make it!
- Sugar: You are going to want both white and brown sugar for the apple pie filling. Using a combination of the two gives a nice balance of flavor.
- Spices: My favorite spice to use in this recipe is apple pie spice blend, but you could also use a mix of whatever cinnamon-based fall spices you enjoy.
- Apples: Use a firm, cooking apple for this. I prefer to use Granny Smith because they hold their shape well when cooking and have a strong flavor.
- Cornstarch: The cornstarch will act as a thickener that helps to ‘set’ your apple pie filling.
- Apple Juice: While some recipes call for water, it’s much tastier to use apple juice for your cooking liquid. It intensifies the apple flavor.
What to Do
Not only does this recipe use only kitchen staples, it’s insanely easy to make. All you need is basic cooking skills and equipment.
- Chop: Chop your peeled apples into small pieces, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in size.
- Simmer: Put your sugar, spices, and cornstarch into a pot and whisk them together. Add in your apple juice and bring it to a boil, then add the apples and continue to simmer until everything is cooked and thickened.
- Chill: Chill your apple pie filling overnight. You can keep it in the fridge for a few days.
How to Use Your Apple Pie Filling
While you can obviously use this for pies or mini pies, it’s great for a lot of other things, too.
- Yogurt: This filling makes a great mix-in for your favorite yogurt. Stir a few spoonfuls in for a lovely fall snack!
- Ice Cream: Dollop a little of this filling on top of your ice cream and your tastebuds will go wild!
- Cakes & Cupcakes: One of my favorite uses for this is as the filling for a cupcake. You could use vanilla cake or spice cake, then after the cupcakes have cooled, cut a little core out of the center. Fill that with your apple pie filling and top with your favorite frosting!
