The Problems with the Pumpkin Spice Latte

I’m not here to bash Starbucks.  They have a fabulous menu full of amazing treats.  It’s not always an option for some of us, though, so we have to find our own way to make things.

The PSL Contains Dairy

Many years ago you could order a dairy-free PSL at Starbucks.  The flavoring syrup itself used to be dairy-free and you could just substitute almond or soy milk in place of cow’s milk.  That’s not the case anymore.  Now the flavor base contains sweetened condensed milk.  That makes it impossible to order a dairy-free version.

The PSL Has Cross-Contact with Other Allergens

Even if you can have dairy and the other ingredients in the PSL are safe for you, there are other allergens present throughout Starbucks drinks.  So, if you’re allergic to soy, or almonds, or need to be gluten-free, drinks at coffee shops can present a risk of reaction due to cross-contact with those allergens on the equipment.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Do you really need encouragement to love a pumpkin spice latte?  Probably not, but here’s a few reason you’ll love this dairy-free recipe!

It’s Easy to Make

Can you measure ingredients?  Are you able to use the stove and stir?  If so, you can make your own PSL!  It’s really that ridiculously easy to make.  Even a child could do it!

It’s Totally Delicious

When I say this tastes great, I mean it!  Not only do I love this dairy-free pumpkin spice latte, even my Starbucks-loving family raved about it.  That’s right, people who can have the regular version love this homemade recipe just as much!

Special Ingredients

Most of this recipe is just basic pantry staples.  There are two special ingredients you’re going to need, though.

Brown Sugar Simple Syrup

You’ve probably heard of simple syrup before.  It’s just equal parts sugar and water simmered until the sugar dissolves.  To make brown sugar simple syrup just swap out the granulated sugar for brown sugar.  The brown sugar bumps up the ‘pumpkin pie’ flavor.

Sweetened Condensed Coconut Milk

What a world we live in!  Now those of us who need/want to avoid dairy can get sweetened condensed coconut milk to use in recipes.  There are several brands out there, but my favorite is Nature’s Charm Sweetened Condensed Coconut Milk.  I use it in so many things, including my No-Churn Salted Caramel Ice Cream.

Enjoy a Dairy-Free Pumpkin Spice Latte At Home

You don’t have to miss out just because you have food allergies.  Now you can use this dairy-free pumpkin spice latte recipe to bring a bit of fall back into your life!
